Tools for network traffic
measurement
Network Traffic
Measurement is basically measurement of the
type and amount of traffic available on any
particular network. This measurement forms
a major part in bandwidth measurement and
hence in Network Monitoring.
Many tools are available for measuring the
traffic in network. Some of these tools measure
the network traffic by sniffing, while others
employ SNMP, WMI or any other agent for measuring
the bandwidth usage on any specific machine
or router. However, SNMP, WMI or any other
agent are generally not able to detect the
type of the traffic passing, nor are they
able to run for the machines which are not
executing the required agent software, like
the troublesome machines on the network, or
for the machines for which the compatible
agent is not available.
For the machines having problems regarding
Compatible Agents, Inline Appliances are used.
These are stationed between the Local Area
Network (LAN) or its exit point, like WAN
or Internet Router, so that every packet which
leaves or enters the given network passes
through them. It generally operates as a bridge
on the given network so that it would be hidden
from the users.
The measurement tool generally consists of
a user interface which can be based on web,
graphics or console; Real time graph of traffic;
Activity in the network which is reported
along with the pre-configured traffic having
the details of Local IP address, Port no or
protocol, Remote IP address and the user name
using which the user has logged in; bandwidth
quota that has been allotted; support regarding
rate limiting or traffic shaping which overlaps
with the network traffic control; it also
contains appropriate support for content filtering
and website blocking and also it should alarm
the administrator about excessive usage.
Some of the tools having desired characteristics
available in the market are Exbander Precision
by DBAM Systems, a software firewall named
FireBeast which offers management of Bandwidth
along with shaping the traffic. Infosim supports
different kind of network flow technologies.
PRTG can run on Windows using graphical as
well as web interface and it also captures
the Net flow or packet sniffing. MRTG is also
a well known tool. Sandvine Intelligent Network
Solutions can measure as well as manage the
network traffic and Cricket is a tool which
was originally compiled for the use of WebTV
Networks.
Thus you may any of these tools for better
network traffic management in your computer.
