Network Monitoring Interface Card
All that you
wanted to know about Network Monitoring Interface
Card
Here is a brief introduction of Network Monitoring
Interface Card and its uses.
Network Monitoring Interface Card (NMIC) is
pretty much similar to a Network Card (NIC).
Though, NMIC is used to passively or stealthily
listen on a network, which is quite unlike
a normal Network card. As a functional unit,
Network Monitoring Interface Card does not
have any MAC Address and thus it is possible
that it will not have the ability to transmit.
Also, it may be impaired to announce its existence
in the network. Thus it differs from a normal
Network Card.
Network Card or Network Adaptor or LAN Adaptor
or NIC is basically a computer part which
allows different computers to converse through
a network. It is an OSI layer 1, that is,
Physical Layer and Layer 2, that is Data link
Layer device as it can provide the access
to the medium of networking physically and
also provides a low level system for addressing
using the MAC addresses. Thus it allows different
users to connect using cables or even through
wireless communication.
MAC Address or Media Access Control Address
or Ethernet Hardware Address or Hardware Address
or Adapter Address is almost a unique identification
to most of the Network Adaptors. It is like
a name for a particular adapter. Thus, two
network cards or adapters in two different
systems will have different names, that is,
different MAC addresses. However, due to MAC
spoofing, it is possible to change the MAC
address of the hardware today.
Advanced or Enhanced Network Monitoring Interface
Cards may have certain features which include
the ability to offload the CPU Intensive Processing
away from the System’s CPU, measurement
of time with extremely high accuracy, filtering
of traffic and the ability to do any other
processing which is application specific.
Network Monitoring Interface Card is generally
used in detection and prevention of intrusion,
lawful interception, network monitoring, Protocol
analysis and flow analysis. One of the most
noticeable manufacturers of the Network Monitoring
Cards is Endace Ltd, which is a New Zealand
based company.
Thus the data, which is supplied by the Network
Monitoring Interface Card, is having some
of the details required for the Network Monitoring.
This Card hardly interferes the normal dataflow
and hence doesn’t effect the response
time or the data flow rate or any other parameter.
All it does is that it reports back its findings
to the server or the system administrator.
