Some Important terms regarding Network Monitoring

For efficient monitoring of your network it helps if you know some of the commonly used terms. Few of the terms are explained below:

1)Uptime is nothing but the measure of for how much time the computer system has been running or has been “up”. Reliability and uptime of the computer is measured in terms of nines. For example, four nines mean 99.99% reliability. Uptime is a very important feature of any machine and shows its health to the administrator. There are very few Network Monitoring Tools which can measure this uptime and report it to the administrator.

2)Downtime is the time for which a given machine or system has been offline, either due to system failure, also known as crash or due to normal maintenance. This parameter is completely opposite to Uptime. Downtime should be carefully monitored so that preventive maintenance can be properly scheduled so as to keep the affect on the programs which are related to it to the minimum.

3)Intrusion Detection System is a system which protects the network from the outside threats and it also detects the manipulations of the unwanted computers. Like a network monitoring system detects internal threats, Intrusion Detection System detects external threats and keeps them at bay. The working can be similar to that of Network Monitoring, but it is not necessary.

4)Time-outs are the indicators of malfunctioning of the network. If a time-out occurs, it means that certain component in the network is not working properly. This component can be software or hardware. Time-outs are what is to be prevented using network monitoring. Time-out occurs when the system from which the data was requested is malfunctioning and is unable to respond within the stipulated time limit. Time-out means cancellation of that particular request.

5) Network Administrator is the person who carries out Network Administration. Network Administrator is also known as Network Specialist and Network Analyst. Job of the network administrator is to maintain the hardware and the software which makes the network. It is his responsibility to make sure that network runs with minimum or no downtime. The network monitoring software directly reports to the network administrator and all the network management is carried out under his supervision.

6)Network Management System (NMS) is the combination of hardware and software which is used to monitor as well as administrator a given network. All the network elements which are present in a given network are controlled by the network management system.
