There are a huge
array of free Network Monitoring Tools and Network
Monitoring Softwares available online. Most
of these softwares are trial versions of the
main software, which has to be bought by the
user. The purpose of the trial version is to
allow the user to evaluate the software with
limited functionalities. Free softwares are
used a lot by small IT companies which do not
have the budget to go for higher quality softwares.
Some commonly used free Web Log Analyzers are
IIS Log File Analyzer, which has a very simple
interface with reports containing information
about number of visitors, simple filter, NS
lookups of the visitors and referrers. Web Log
Expert supports both IIS and Apache log files.
Both these versions can easily identify the
referring traffic, page stats, entry page, search
engines and traffic of every hour, day or week.
Full version of this software has many more
features.
Mach 5 Analyzer is a very solid and matured
product, which has very good reporting capabilities
in Word, Excel and HTML. It has a very extensive
range of filters and tracking and errors. This
software is not available for free of cost.
Who’s-On reports its findings in real
time. It tracks the visitor’s activities
and set can set up a number of alerts for different
exceptions and undesirable traffic. This tool
is extremely addictive. This is not available
for free.
CoolMon is a tool, which provides the information
about the system in a transparent pane on the
desktop. Using a variety of scripts and available
extensions, information about multiple systems
can be gathered and hence you can decide whether
to make a webpage of not. VNC (Virtual Network
Computing) helps you control the desktop from
anywhere in the world. Event Sentry helps you
to monitor the log of Windows. This tool acts
as a service and will send you appropriate notifications.
Hermes mail Server is a SMTP/POP3 mail server,
which can be used for relaying alerts from Network
Monitoring Tools. It is a Windows based program.
Network Notepad is a simple freeware, which
is an alternative to the costly diagramming
programs. Diagrams are extremely important for
the network Monitoring. ISA Server enables you
to watch the traffic in real time if you have
a Microsoft Proxy or ISA Server.
These many tools enable the user or administrator
to monitor the network with extreme ease and
reduce the cost that they would have to incur
in case of failure of any system or any part
of the network.
