What is Computer Network?
It is very easy
and simple to understand what is computer
network. In a layman’s language it can
be said that a computer Network is simply
interconnection of two or more computers.
Networks are classified on the basis of the
network layer on which they operate on the
basis of the basic reference model which is
considered as standards in the industry, for
example, Four Layer Internet Protocol Suite
Model. Though the seven layer OSI, Open Systems
Interconnection, reference model is known
more in academia; most of the other networks
use IP or Internet Protocol Suite for their
Network.
On the basis of scale of use, computer networks
can be classified into Personal Area Network,
Local Area Network, Campus Area Network, Metropolitan
Area Network and Wide Area Network. As the
size of the network increases, importance
of Network Monitoring also increases, though
the difficulties in implementing a proper
Network Monitoring Tool also increases.
On the basis of connection methods, that is
the kind of hardware that has been employed
to connect the individual systems, the computer
networks can be classified as Optical Fiber,
Wireless LAN, Power Line Communication, Home
PNA and Ethernet. Ethernet uses physical wiring
for connecting two or more devices and they
also employ the use of hubs, switches, routers
or bridges. It is a bit more difficult to
monitor networks having switches or using
Wireless Technology.
Computer Networks can also be classified on
the basis of the relationship which exists
between the systems connected in the network,
E.g. active networking, peer to peer architectures
and client server.
On the basis of Network Topology that is involved,
the computer network can be classified into
Bus Network, Star Network, Ring Network, Mesh
Network, Star-bus network and tree or hierarchical
topology network, etc. Installing Network
Monitoring software in any of these networks
has a unique method which needs to be followed
and unique problems with the implementation.
On the basis of protocol, the computer network
can be classified into a number of names.
The list of these names is ever increasing
and can be found on many websites. Change
in protocol means that the settings of the
Network Monitoring Software will have to be
changed to suit the new demands.
Basic Hardware components of a network are
Network Interface Cards, Repeaters, Hubs,
Bridges, Switches and Routers. A proper Network
Monitoring Device with appropriate Network
Monitoring software can be installed on any
of these components.
These are just the basics of a computer network!
